Sunlu Water Washable Resin For Miniatures

Testing out a new resin is always exciting, especially when it promises ease of use and is a pretty budget option. In this post, I’ll share my experience with Sunlu's Water Washable Solid Gray Resin.

Let's see how it stacks up.

First Impressions of Water Washable Resin

Water washable resin has gained popularity for a reason. It eliminates the need for alcohol in the cleaning process, which is a big deal for home users who want to avoid the mess and fumes. However, my past experiences show they can be brittle, which means if you’re in the market for printing tabletop miniatures, it may not be the best option.

Printing Quality and Adjustments

Upon testing, the print quality of this resin is impressive. I printed various models, including some standard sized tabletop miniatures and a mech walker.

All the details came out crisp and clear with all the models looking great with minimal tinkering.

The resin itself seems relatively liquidy, even at lower temperatures. In my experience this makes printing easier, and is fairly common with water washable resins.

Warping and Cleanup

Warping can be a common issue with resins, especially when printing models with multiple parts. However, Sunlu’s resin proved to be outstanding in this regard. There was virtually no warping, and assembling the printed parts was straightforward. Cleanup was minimal, making it ready to use right out of the printer.

For larger models that require some assembly, this resin really hits the spot!

Durability Test

No 3D print review is complete without testing durability. At the gaming table, accidents happen, and miniatures take a tumble. I ran a drop test with demon models from One Page Rules, dropping them from different heights: coffee table, standard table, and a higher shelf. The results?

  • Coffee Table Height (47 CM): 5 out of 5 survived

  • Standard Table Height (102 CM): 3 out of 5 survived

  • Shelf Height (144 CM): 4 out of 5 survived

The resin demonstrated decent resilience, although it didn’t match the performance of some ABS-like counterparts. Still, it did well given the circumstances.

Is Sunlu's Resin Worth It?

Choosing the right resin depends on your specific needs. If you want to avoid IPA and are looking for something that cleans with water, this one's a good pick. It offers solid print quality with minimal warping and easy assembly. It’s particularly useful for larger prints, like vehicles and terrain, where flexibility isn't a top priority.

Final Thoughts

Sunlu’s Water Washable Solid Gray Resin offers a practical alternative to standard options, especially for larger models. It's easy to handle and produces impressive detail with a little adjustment on printing settings. For anyone new to 3D resin printing or looking for a user-friendly resin without the need for alcohol cleanup, this is worth considering.
