Realm Break
Introducing Realm Break, a tabletop apocalyptic RPG adventure with randomised gameplay and events.
What is Realm Break?
Realm Break is a work in progress, but the aim is to launch a core rule set, including events, map assets, enemies, items, and characters. The core rules will be made available here in the future, free of charge.
How it Works:
Realm Break is designed with random gameplay and events in mind, making each adventure unique for the players. The Realm Master sets up the game and guides the players, controlling the events, enemies, and random NPC encounters.
The game takes place during an apocalyptic event called ‘The Realm Break,’ in which random portals to other realms have begun to open across the world. Anything could be through these portals, including demons, zombies, aliens, fantasy and historical realms, allowing for a huge variety of settings and enemies.
Players chose from a random selection of characters, ranging from your average civilian, all the way through to your hardened veteran soldier, and then they set out to explore the setting. There will be stories and campaigns available, as well as a selection of objectives for players to complete.
Setting Up The Game
The game is designed to be played with an overworld type map for the players to explore, e.g. a city, and points of interest for them to enter. The Realm Master will set up the map and add different points of interest, small, medium and large.
There are different types of buildings available for players to explore. Small, medium, and large. Each building has different events associated with it when exploring which can be found in the events section of the rules.
The Realm Master can decide on an objective, story, or create their own hook. Upon the first play through, players will select from a random group of characters, and depending on their character, will select two active ability cards, and one passive ability. Each character will have their own back-story and motivations, that may not align with other members of the party.
They then embark upon their objective…
Player Phase
During this phase, each player has two actions to make. They can move, search something, attack, use an item, or interact with the environment.
Enemy Phase
During this phase, any enemies on the map will take two actions, just like the players before them. This could include hunting for the players, attacking, or calling for reinforcement. Each enemy type has different abilities, and a different difficulty level.
Realm Phase
During this phase, the Realm Master will roll a specified number of dice to decide on the event that takes place. Depending on the area the players are located, in the city, a small, medium, or large building, different events may take place, although sometimes the players are given a break and nothing happens.
Events are randomly decided and include things like enemies spawning, random world events like an earthquake, friendly characters spawning, and much more. The aim of the Realm Phase is to make each play through random and unique, adding different levels of challenge for the players.
